In this week’s NY Times blind date, Clemmie, 27, a television writer, met Joe, 28, a civil servant and former accountant, for a night of good vibes, awkward moments, and some gentle near-misses on the romance front.
Clemmie on Joe: “Sweet, easygoing and intelligent”
Clemmie came hoping for a Hollywood romance, ideally with someone who wouldn’t judge her for her premeditated pizza order. Joe passed the test – and even chose pizza as his hypothetical final meal.
She praised his adventurous streak, his charm, and perfect table manners, but noted the night lacked that elusive “flirty vibe.” There was no kiss – “not on a school night,” as she put it – but they continued on to a pub, and she gave the date a very respectable 9/10.
Most awkward moment? Realizing he looked like not one, but two of her exes. (Tough break, Joe.)
Joe on Clemmie: “Engaging, charming and funny”
Joe was looking for a meet-cute worthy of a Hallmark movie. While sparks didn’t fly, he clearly had a great time, calling Clemmie funny, friendly, and easy to talk to.
They shared TV industry stories, bonded over travel in South America, and swapped local tips as Clemmie plans her move east. Joe particularly enjoyed her Extra gum ad anecdote – a story involving kissing a stranger, naturally.
He rated the night a 7/10, citing the lack of romantic chemistry, and joking that he’ll return for the aubergine parmigiana he didn’t get to order.
Verdict: A solid connection, but no spark
Despite no kiss, no cocktails, and a couple of unfortunate “you look like my ex” comments, both Clemmie and Joe seemed to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. They’re moving into the same area and both enjoy a run in the park – so a future friendship (or casual run-in) seems likely.
Prediction: No romantic follow-up, but if you see them chatting near a Hackney coffee shop one weekend, don’t be surprised.
And Joe? Maybe leave the accountant past off your next first-date résumé. Unless they’re into that sort of thing.
