Kacey Musgraves Takes Allyship to New Heights After Accidentally Visiting a Gay Cruising Sauna in Sydney
Kacey Musgraves has long been one of the most outspoken allies of the LGBTQ+ community, but during her latest tour stop in Sydney, Australia, she managed to elevate that title in a way no one saw coming — including herself.
While performing on November 20, the Grammy-winning singer paused her show to tell the audience about a recent off-day adventure gone hilariously sideways. Hoping to relax with an infrared sauna session, Musgraves searched for a spa within walking distance from her hotel and landed on a place simply called Sydney Sauna. What she didn’t know at the time was that she was heading straight into one of the city’s best-known gay cruising saunas.
As soon as she mentioned the venue, the Sydney crowd erupted in knowing cheers. Laughing, Musgraves told the audience, “Sounds like you’re familiar,” before explaining how she gradually pieced together where she had ended up.
According to Musgraves, she initially walked in expecting a typical wellness spa — but a closer look at the venue’s promotional language made everything click. “This is very gay… this is not meant for me,” she recalled telling herself. The website described the business as “Sydney’s premier gay sauna destination,” even highlighting its “cruising areas,” “wet rooms,” and “23 serviceable wet rooms,” which left the audience roaring with laughter.
Videos of her recounting the moment quickly made their way to TikTok, where fans celebrated both her confusion and her ultimate response.
Because instead of leaving, Musgraves embraced the moment with curiosity and humor.
“So I stayed!” she said proudly from the stage. “I wanted to make some friends, I was nosy. What if I could learn a thing or two in there?”
Her playful retelling only solidified the singer’s reputation for genuine allyship, something that has been a key thread in her career. Musgraves has repeatedly used her platform to uplift LGBTQ+ fans, including her openly supportive lyrics and her well-known single “Rainbow,” which became an anthem for queer listeners.
In 2022, while accepting GLAAD’s Vanguard Award, Musgraves reflected on the impact of that support, citing one moment in particular that stayed with her: a gay country fan telling her, “You have made me feel like I’m finally invited to a party that I’ve never been invited to.” Musgraves said the comment “killed [her] in the best way possible.”
And she wasn’t done with Sydney Sauna, either. With a wink, she told the cheering crowd, “They said it’s 24 hours, so we’re going back after the show!”
For a community that has embraced her music, her advocacy, and now her sauna misadventures, the feeling is clearly mutual.
