India's union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The region was created by joining the old Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu regions. The Government of India first revealed its plans for the proposed merger in July 2019. The relevant legislation was then approved by the Indian Parliament in December 2019 and went into force on January 26, 2020. Four distinct geographic regions make up the territory: Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman, and the island of Diu. After Goa was annexed by India in the middle of the 20th century, all four of these regions, which were formerly a part of Portuguese Goa and Damaon with Panjim serving as their joint capital, came under Indian rule. These were co-managed as Goa, Daman, and Diu until Goa was awarded statehood in 1987 as a result of the Konkani language movement. Daman serves as the current capital.
