Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp Reflect on Queer Journeys, Pitch Perfect Bonds, and Supporting Each Other On and Off Set

Actors Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp, known for their roles in the Pitch Perfect franchise, recently opened up about their personal journeys with identity and the deep friendships formed during their time on set, while promoting their new action-comedy film Bride Hard.

Wilson, who starred as the hilarious and unfiltered "Fat Amy" beginning in the 2012 breakout musical comedy, recalled a now-iconic line from the franchise involving a whispered suspicion that one of the Barden Bellas might be queer. The joke, made during a scene where Ester Dean’s character confesses to a gambling problem, had Fat Amy quipping, “I think we all know where this is going. Les-be-honest.”

Speaking to PRIDE in a recent interview, Wilson admitted that the joke may have hit closer to home than audiences realized at the time. “I made that joke secretly, maybe thinking I was the gay one! Surprise! All the Bellas are gay now! Everyone’s gay,” she said with a laugh.

Wilson went on to describe the camaraderie on the set of Pitch Perfect 2, noting that candid conversations among castmates helped her begin to understand her own identity. “I remember on Pitch Perfect 2, a lot of us girls were having a chat in between takes about sexuality. It was such a kind, honest, open chat. It really meant a lot to me that day on set with the girls involved,” she shared. “That friendship that we’ve all shared has helped and supported each other.”

The Senior Year actress came out publicly in 2022, revealing her relationship with fashion designer Ramona Agruma. She later disclosed that her coming-out moment had been precipitated by a planned exposé from an Australian newspaper. Despite the circumstances, Wilson says the love and support from her friends and fans was overwhelmingly positive. “I don’t think I could have had a better experience,” she said.

Anna Camp, who portrayed uptight Bella leader Aubrey, also recently stepped into the LGBTQ+ spotlight. Though she had not publicly addressed her sexuality before, fans began speculating after a TikTok video posted in February showed Camp with her girlfriend, stylist Jade Whipkey. When asked in an impromptu street interview what she expects from men on a first date, Camp answered, “I don’t expect anything anymore,” followed by an almost inaudible but subtitled quip: “Because I like women and it’s great.”

The video went viral weeks after posting, prompting the couple to subtly confirm their relationship on social media. Camp posted a photo of Whipkey in May with the caption “Date Night,” and reposted a romantic image shared by Whipkey, along with a fiery heart emoji.

Now, during Bride Hard press interviews, Camp is addressing it for the first time directly. “It’s been really wonderful to be so welcomed and so supported, especially by my really beautiful and wonderful friend here,” she said, nodding to Wilson. “Life is an evolution and I’m very happy where I am today.”

The actors’ openness reflects a broader trend in Hollywood, where more stars are feeling comfortable embracing their identities—and where co-stars are becoming key allies in that journey.
