While “Make You Mine,” “15 Minutes,” and “Yes Baby” showcased Beer’s sleek dance-pop side, Locket finds her pivoting toward something softer, more ethereal, and deeply personal. “I was going through a really intense relationship and breakup while writing this album,” she admits. “A lot of it just wrote itself because it was all-consuming.”
The record’s second single, “Bittersweet,” embodies that emotional duality perfectly. Over shimmering synths and a stomping chorus, Beer delivers lyrics that balance heartbreak with self-acceptance:
“Now that it’s over, you’ll blame it all on me / I know I should be bitter, but baby right now I’m bittersweet.”
The accompanying video—co-directed by Beer and co-starring The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Sean Kaufman—turns pain into celebration. The album’s title came to Beer during a reflective moment scrolling through her camera roll. “I’ve always loved vintage things—antiques, delicate pieces that hold memories,” she says. “Lockets are sentimental; they carry photos and stories close to the heart. That felt symbolic of this album. It’s a collection of memories—some painful, some beautiful—all kept together.”
Beer chose the title long before most of the songs were written, suggesting that Locket was destined to be an emotional time capsule from the start.
From Studio to Screen: Madison Beer, the Visual Storyteller
Beer isn’t just writing and singing her story—she’s directing it. For Locket, she co-directed every video, drawing from a lifelong passion for film. “As a kid, I used to make stop-motion videos with Post-It notes and edit music clips on iMovie,” she says. “I’ve always loved storytelling visually.”
Now, with a growing reputation as both an artist and director, Beer plans to take that passion even further. “I can’t imagine handing my visuals off to someone else,” she says. “Maybe one day, I’ll take it to the big screen. Film has always been my other love.”

As she prepares for Locket’s release, Beer is already imagining how the new songs will come alive on stage. “Touring gives every song a new life,” she says. “There’s nothing like hearing a crowd of thousands sing something you wrote alone in your room. It’s pure magic.”
Before hitting the road again, Beer will perform at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show—a full-circle moment for the artist who grew up watching the event on TV. “I still can’t believe it,” she says. “It feels surreal to be following in the footsteps of artists I’ve admired for so long.”
