London, UK – October 2025Sydney Sweeney is making bold moves on the red carpet, stepping away from the romantic silhouettes that have defined much of her past fashion choices in favor of a more daring, lingerie-inspired aesthetic. The actor, best known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, brought serious drama to the BFI London Film Festival while promoting her latest film, Christy, a biopic of legendary boxer Christy Martin.

Wearing a custom Alexander McQueen gown designed by the label’s new creative director Seán McGirr, Sweeney reimagined red carpet femininity with a powerful fusion of gothic romance and boudoir elegance.

A New Direction in Style for Sydney Sweeney

Sweeney’s look, developed in collaboration with her longtime stylist Molly Dickson, marked a clear departure from the fairy-tale-inspired dresses she’s worn in the past. According to Dickson, the aim was to showcase a more confident and experimental side of the actress.

“We wanted to take Sydney in a bit of a new direction for this—something distinct from the more romantic and princess silhouettes she’s often gravitated toward in the past,” said Dickson in an interview with Vogue. “What I love most about Sydney is her openness—she’s always game to experiment and evolve.”

The Look: Gothic Drama Meets Romantic Tribute

The custom McQueen gown was a two-in-one design, combining a ballet pink embroidered lace base with a silk satin corseted bodice. The corset featured a structured, full-coverage design with a gathered bust, while the skirt flowed into a ruffled hem, adding texture and movement. The look merged McGirr’s darker aesthetic with Sweeney’s well-known fondness for corsetry, giving the outfit a dramatic yet elegant edge.

Importantly, the choice of pink was not arbitrary. It served as a subtle tribute to Christy Martin, the real-life boxer Sweeney portrays in her upcoming film. Martin, a groundbreaking figure in women’s boxing, was known for wearing pink in the ring.

“Sydney also wanted to incorporate pink as a nod to Christy, whose signature ring attire was famously pink—a subtle but meaningful tribute woven into the look,” added Dickson.

A Style Evolution in Progress

Sweeney’s embrace of pink corsetry isn’t new. At the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, she wore a custom pink Erdem dress, complete with a structured bodice and draped skirt. On that occasion, she walked the red carpet alongside Christy Martin herself, who also wore her signature color.

This latest McQueen moment at the London Film Festival, however, feels like a statement. It signals Sweeney’s continued evolution as both an actress and a fashion force—someone unafraid to take risks, pay homage to the real-life figures she portrays, and reimagine what red carpet style can look like.

More Than Just Fashion

With Christy set for release later this year, Sweeney’s red carpet looks have doubled as thoughtful nods to the story she’s helping tell. By incorporating symbolic elements—like the color pink—into high fashion moments, Sweeney is reinforcing her commitment to the role while also crafting a compelling new narrative about who she is as a style icon.
